Remote Connection Performance laggy and slow

Question

I installed Teamviewer but whenever I connect to my partner's laptop the remote session behaves as if the internet connection is extremely slow. Everything becomes choppy and laggy, and even simple clicks take a long time to respond. However, our internet connections seem fine, and the ping is consistently around 12 ms. Could this be related to TeamViewer’s free version, or would upgrading to the premium version actually improve the performance? Or could there be another issue causing the lag, such as display settings, hardware acceleration, network configuration, or TeamViewer settings?

I mainly need remote access for coding and testing code on my partner’s laptop. What would be the best way to get a smooth and responsive remote desktop experience for this purpose?

One thing i have noticed is that my partner does not have high end device. Even internet connection is the same on his side too. but he does not have a dedicated GPU and his system often shows 100% disk usage in Task Manager. That could possibly be the reason. I will try it on a different machine and see if that makes any difference.

A 12 ms ping is a good sign, but it doesn't necessarily rule out the cause of the lag. Remote desktop performance also depends on upload/download bandwidth, packet loss, CPU/GPU usage, and how much of the screen is changing during the session.

Since you're using it for coding, I'd first try lowering the remote session's display quality and disabling wallpaper/animations if those options are available. Also check whether the partner's laptop is under heavy CPU/GPU load while you're connected.

I'd test the connection with a simple static screen versus something with lots of movement. If static content is responsive but scrolling/code changes become very laggy, that points more toward bandwidth or encoding/decoding performance than latency.

I wouldn't upgrade to Premium solely to fix this until you've tested those settings. If the same lag occurs after reducing display quality and confirming there isn't packet loss or high resource usage, then it would be worth checking TeamViewer's connection diagnostics to see whether the session is using a direct connection or being routed through TeamViewer's servers.
