Sometimes, software can falsely be detected as malware.
These cases are referred to as false positives. In other words, the security solution is “positive” that there is a threat, but this is false.
In this article, we will explain why and what you can do to solve such issues.
It can sometimes occur, that a legitimate software is reported as being malicious by your security software. There are many reasons for that, e.g.:
- the software is very new and the security solution doesn’t know it yet
- the security software’s automated detection of unknown threats (so called heuristic detection) assumes the software is malicious even though it absolutely isn’t
Contact the provider
Most, probably all, computer users encountered a false positive detection when using different applications over the years. They had to contact the company of the application to see what is happening.
In virtually all of these cases, the problem solve itself in a few hours or days as the provider of the application that was reported takes care of it together with the company who provides the security solution.
It is very important to stay vigilant when on the internet. Even if you assume it is a false positive, it is good to still get in touch with the provider of the application that was reported as well as the provider of the security software just to be on the safe side.
