Thank you, "Remove External Background" is the culprit. Why on earth is this feature on by default? I've had this happen so many times and been annoyed with it very often.

Same issue on 12.0.72365. First logon succeeded, but screen got stuck after a couple of seconds. I tried reconnecting, but now it get's stuck like all the other people here. Will have to wait till tomorrow to see if a restart fixes this.
