How do I boost volume?

How can I get more volume out of sound streamed from the host without turning up the volume on the remote access device which is my laptop? I like to stream music from the host, but the volume comes through so low that system sounds from my laptop are too loud for my liking.

Also, why do system sounds from the host not come through? For example, an alert sound that may be alerting me to something important
