wake on LAN and wifi

If I understand correctly, if my computer connects to the internet via wifi I cannot remotely wake it if it is sleeping. Is that right? The computer is quite far from the modem and a cable is not practicable.

WoWLAN works with some hardware / network adapters, while it just plain does not work with others...
