Beginner question - accessing server files/folders via VPN

Hi guys, first time poster here! Am very interested in team viewer for our company. I have a question that may seem extremely simple  to some of you, but I want to clear something up with my understanding of the tool.

Besides remote assistance from IT to any user that is outside of our office, I want our remote workers who work from home or abroad, be able to connect via VPN to our storage/server, so they can access shared files on the server, and save new work there. We have a problem of our users saving important and sensitive projects on their desktops - not on servers.

Is this possible?

PS: Each member has a laptop they take home w/ them. They don't connect remotely to their own computer/desktop at work. Does this matter?
