Remote control connects but screen view obstructed by grid pattern

I can transfer files and remote connect to my computer (ubuntu), but there is a moving grid pattern on top of the screen such that it is hard to see the screen contents. I dis- and reconnected several times. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?
