Problem installing TeamViewer14 on Ubuntu on bootable USB drive

I want to install TV14 on a USB drive (with persistant storage setup) so that I can connect to a laptop running Ubuntu18 that is often failing to boot and needing fsck command to fix drive issues.
When I've tried installing the .deb file the install progress bar flies by superfast and there is no error message but the app doesn't install.
I've tried and failed using the command line install as well and would appreciate any tips you might have.
