Do friends and family ask you to sort out problems on their machines, or do you need access to colleagues' computers? Do you wish you could do it from the comfort of your own home or office without having to visit them? Then you need a program that allows you to operate their machine remotely. There are several programs available to do this, but for this guide, TeamViewer 11 will be used.
Download and installation
Go to the TeamViewer web page and press the Download TeamViewer button and follow the instructions to save the setup file, Teamview_setup_en.exe. (The name may be different in different parts of the world.)
Navigate to the location where you downloaded the file then double click it to run the installation. The following page will open.
Under How do you want to proceed?, select Installation to access this computer remotely (unattended), and under How do you want to use TeamViewer? select the option that suits you. (For the purposes of this guide, Personal / Non-commercial use was selected.) Then press Accept - finish. On the next screen, press Yes and the installation will begin. You will then be asked to set up unattended access in the image below.This step is optional. but is useful should you need to access your computer remotely, so the steps will be shown.
Press Next, then in the following image accept or change the default name and enter your choice of password.
Press Next and you will be asked if you want to create an account.
Creating an account is optional, but is useful should you wish or need to access your computer remotely. Press Next then press Finish on the next screen and you are finished.
You will see the following screen, which is also the one you see when you start TeamViewer,
This process can be repeated on the computers that you wish to connect to, or they can use the quick method shown below. If you install TeamViewer on other machines and created a TeamViewer account, you will be able to create a list of all the computers together with their connect details.
To use TeamViewer, make sure that the program is running on the machine you want to connect to then start TeamViewer on your machine. Alternatively, the remote machine can use the temporary access method without having to install TeamViewer. To do this, the person on the remote machine should go the TeamViewer website then scroll down and press the Join remote control session button.
They will then be prompted to save the file.
They should navigate to the file location and run it. They will then see the following screen.
By clicking on the existing password they can either create another random password or use their own personal password. Whether using the installed program or the temporary access, they should let you know the ID and password for their machine. Under no circumstances should they give these details to anyone they don't know. Enter the Partner ID for the remote computer as shown below.. For this example, the connection will be made to a machine running Windows 10 with the ID 722446564. Then press Connect to partner.
Enter the password that was created on the remote computer, then press Log On.
Once connected, the remote screen will look like this.
The fly outs to the right-hand side and the top can be pushed back to the border.
You can now operate the remote computer as if you were sitting in front of it. As an example, the Start button will be pressed to show the Start Menu in Windows 10.
To finish the session, simply close TeamViewer. If you are using the free version the following message will appear.
If TeamViewer has been installed on the remote machine, even though the connection has been lost, TeamViewer will continue to run in the System Tray of the remote machine, so it can be reconnected to if necessary. To completely stop TeamViewer, right click on TeamViewer in the System Tray and select Exit.
