The sun is shining outside, but you’re slowly melting in your office chair? Then it’s high time you tried out telecommuting with TeamViewer.

I think more or less everybody has spent a day like this:

Summer’s approaching and it’s getting hotter by the minute, but instead of enjoying the weather in your deck chair, you’re tied to your desk and office chair.

There’s no more space to cool your drink in the office freezer and there’s no fan next to your desk, but only dozens of computers blowing heat at your face.

Every one of your colleagues, including your boss, is yearningly glancing through the windows.

That’s when you know it’s time to initiate countermeasures!

And the answer to an overheated office seems pretty obvious: Work from somewhere else.

Whether you’re satisfied with the possibility of working from a home office or you think a workcation could be beneficial for you – it has never been easier to do so.

With TeamViewer, you can even work on your office computer remotely to use all your software and calculating power.

So what do you have to do in order to work from home or your favorite vacation destination?

Let’s map out a plan to convince your boss and set up a home office that allows you to be productive and comfortable at the same time.

Persuading Your Superior

You might not have a telecommuting policy in place with your employer yet and therefore must convince your boss first.

This task can vary in difficulty, depending on the nature of your job, your company’s culture and – perhaps most of all - your boss’ attitude towards telecommuting.

Luckily, there are many good arguments in favor of it.

In fact, according to Forbes, telecommuting already saw a big increase in popularity over the past years, because it reduces

  • Commuting costs for employees
  • Facility costs
  • Absenteeism
  • And turnover

…while increasing employees’ productivity and being beneficial for their work/life balance thanks to a higher flexibility.

Even if it’s unlikely that you will be granted the option to work from home whenever you want, you can surely bargain the telecommuting topic with your boss to reach a compromise.

Best Practices for Telecommuters

Now that you’re able to work from outside the office, let’s go over some tips to make the most of your working time, so you can enjoy your new freedom as soon as possible.

Although you now have the freedom to do whatever you please and divide your time as you like, you shouldn’t forget that you’re still “at work”.

So if you want to “leave” early, you have to complete your tasks in time and keep up your productivity.

First of all, you should minimize distractions.

To do so, it’s a good idea to set up a home office dedicated for work only.

If that’s not an option for you, make sure to at least clean up your work space. For me and many others, a tidy desk serves for a focused mind.

Also, and this should go without saying, don’t visit social media or play with your phone while working, if it’s not part of your actual job.

The next tip might sound contradictory to what some of you could have been looking to achieve by telecommuting, but is most helpful to get over with your work quickly.

Sticking to your regular morning routine and working pattern will keep you in the right mindset to get your work done.

Because I’m sure you’ve had this experience, too, some time:

You planned to take on a bunch of tasks the next day, but without setting yourself any time frame to do so. Then, next thing you know, it’s past lunch and you’re still lazing around in joggers.

Last but not least, keep up the collaboration and communication with your team.

It is a crucial factor when working from outside the office for many reasons, e.g. for socializing with colleagues, keeping up-to-date about projects, or solving problems.

Also, it will show your boss that allowing you to telecommute was no mistake and you’re still engaged with your work.

TeamViewer offers many means of communication, such as Chat, Video Calls and Presentations that you can use to work with your team as if you were in the same room.

Now, Enjoy Summer from Out of the Office

Telecommuting, be it from home or a workcation, might not be as good as two weeks of holidays, but it grants you greater flexibility and saves lots of time and money spent on commuting.

And as if that wasn’t awesome enough, there’s also ample space in your own freezer and no pile of computers and other machinery producing heat, right?

So why are you still sitting there? It’s time to act and get more out of this summer with TeamViewer!
