my partner's screen is black

Hi, I am a brand new user (first time). I connected with my partner to help him work on a document, and all I could see was a black screen and the icons on his desktop. He said he had an Excel spreadsheet open, but I couldn't see it. Can anyone tell me what went wrong? Thanks.
