Two factor authentication stopped working for one node after 18 months of smooth sailing

After 18 months of successfully using two factor authentication one node rejected my google authenticator code over an over again.  I have disabled two factor authentication but want to find out what causes this and whether simply reactivation will solve this problem.  I don't want to get locked out of this remote node again.
