contacts lost

Hi all, this morning I had the unpleasant surprise that all my contacts have disappeared. How is such a thing possible? I haven't done any version upgrades, I'm on version 12. I've lost dozens and dozens of contacts. There is a way to recover them. Or has my account been hacked?

I have the same issue apparently no help in here :-(
