Deleting shortcut deletes drive

On my Debian machine I created a sym-link for a mounted drive for easier access. Later I logged on to this computer with TeamViewer in File transfer mode, and as I had no use for that shortcut, I deleted it (with TeamViewer). It proceeded to wipe my entire drive clean and I had to use third-party software to recover the contents. Is this intentional behaviour? IF YES, WHY?
