how to name devices

Some time ago, I was able to change the name of my devices to something more meaningful. Today, while in 'computers & contacts', when I right-click on 'properties' of a device or select 'properties' from the upper right corner, a window appears with a 'description' edit box but doesn't let me enter anything into the box. More importantly, I can't change the device's name as I used to be able to.
Why does the 'description' field not work?
Where do I change the name of the device now?

Would also love some clarity on this - what is the point of showing us if we can't edit!

I think the answer is that you now have to use the Management Console for the task of naming devices and assigning groups
