Can someone steal your information or date on a team viewer connection?

I recently lost a good sum of money on a forex trading scam. I was contacted by a company that supposedly seized the stolen assets that i lost. They have retrieved the assets contacted me to go theough the recovery process and are going to return the funds to my bitcoin wallet and then charge me 5% retrieval fee. I was esctatic about the recovery of my funds.

Part of the process requires them to connect to my computer with team viewer. Can they be stealing my data and passwords behind the scenes while i see the cursor on the screen moving.

If i do this with a stripped down laptop would i be ok to complete this process to recover my funds. What i do not know is how much access do they have to my laptop other than just cursor control.

😓 Please Help

    Hi @smithrocks,

Thank you for sharing your story. We're sorry to hear what happened to you.

We know that being a victim of a scam attack or any other criminal threat can be an emotional and stressful situation for most of us.

Furthermore, we apologize in advance for this long reply and kindly ask you to read it carefully, as we take security and scamming matters very seriously.

When a person is connecting to your computer, they can indeed control your computer if it is authorized. Seeing the cursor moving on your screen means that they were actively taking action on your computer. However, they cannot access any data behind the scenes while moving your cursor.

Within a TeamViewer connection, it is possible to transfer files from one side to the other, which includes notifications on the remote side as shown below. Have you seen any of those notifications during the connection on your side?

    1. When the File transfer starts - it includes the profile picture and username (if any), and the TeamViewer ID of the person connecting to you :

    2. When a file is successfully transferred:

    3. When several files have been successfully transferred (if any):

Also, if other people need to establish a connection to your computer, you can switch their permission from Full Access to Confirm all or View and Show (more details in Access Control (incoming connections)):

    Important notes:

    • We recommend that users who have been the victim of criminal activities get in touch with their local police departments, in order to report their cases. This is particularly important because TeamViewer is subject to very strict data protection and privacy regulations, and can release sensitive data only to authorized individuals and authorities.
    • Also, we strongly recommend that affected victims contact their bank, a consumer protection organization, and a trustworthy IT support company. In most cases, the payments that have been made can be refunded by the bank, and any malicious software installed by the callers can be removed by the IT support company.
    • You can also report the scam by clicking on this link.

If there is anything else we can help you with or if there are still any open questions, don't hesitate to contact us again!

    Stay safe,

    Jen
