enabling microphone without the giant tab on the right....

hello, is there any way to enable the microphone without opening that huge panel on the right side? on a small laptop that takes about 1/4 of the screen and that's a lot. The enable microphone when starting a session does not work, one have to enable it manually, and when you close that tab, then the mic gets muted again... this was not like this on the older version before we got forced to adopt the new interface. I hope there is a way, cause on my laptop things get too small by being forced to keep that tab open.
