Reliable unattended Android host?

I am planning on using an unattended mobile in a remote location that I need access to. I haven't got a spare phone so want to buy a cheap used device (perhaps with a cracked screen) that I know is going to work.
Does anyone have good experience of connecting to a remote phone on a regular basis with full remote control? What phone model are you connecting to? What version of Android and what versions of Teamviewer (Host and Client)?
