Same Teamviewer ID after re-format of Macbook

I have just re-formatted and reinstalled OS x on my MacBook. It still gives my MacBook the same Teamviewer ID as it had before. How can TeamViewer know it's the same computer since the MacBook was completely erased (I did a partition erase which obviously does not leave any traces). Is this based on the Macs serial number, ethernet/wifi MAC address or something else?

On Windows, sometimes the ID is persistent after a reformat, and sometimes it isn't. I have seen it both ways. I asked TeamViewer support about this and they wouldn't give me a clear answer. It's secret blend of hardware, software info.
