connecting to Ubuntu system on KVM

trying to connect to a Ubuntu system that's on a KVM that is switched to a different system. Ubuntu system effectively has no keyboard, mouse or display attached. The connecting display will just hang at the "initializing display parameters" screen and never connect.

When you switch the KVM back to the host system, it works fine.
