Daemon not recognised as running by TV 12 in Ubuntu 16.04.2

I am exasperated with trying to get TV to work. I have tried as many sources of advice as i can find. I have reinstalled many times.

The installation is successful, the daemon is running per tests I run. I click on the icon for TV and it says the daemon is not running. i can not get beyond that point. I have followed the installation advice on the TV.com site . I have used TV for an number of years but now can not run it . Please suggest what I should do. Is there a beta version that has recognised this as a bug and corrected it? What more should I do?
