Keyboard not typing - Macintosh

I am on a Macintosh MacBook Pro and I am trying to connect to a remote Macintosh Mac Pro.  The login screen appears and the mouse works but I cannot type my credentials in order to log in.  I have seen answers here for Windows computers with this probem, but not for Macintosh.
