Am having difficulty gaining control over connected iPad

Am new to Teamviewer and may simply not be doing things correctly, but thought I was following instructions correctly. Am trying to connect my Mac to an iPad so I can remotely control the iPad, but when the connection is made, although I can see the iPad screen, I am unable to control it. Conversely, when I connect the opposite way, I can use the iPad to move the cursor on my Mac, but can only see a black screen on the iPad. Am doing this with both devices in the same room. What's the point of that, I hear you ask, but I am trying to see how it works so can then try to do the same to access grandparent's iPad to help them with various tasks. I hope someone is able to offer advice. I suspect I am missing the obvious somehow. Jim
