Free user: access XP from Windows 10

I have looked at several postings and remain confused.

Some postings seem to say on paid users can reach back to an XP computer from W10.

Others say the restriction is one way W10 to XP is OK, but not the reverse

And others imply you can run the XP version on W10 and gain access.

What is the definitive answer for a free user?
