Remote control an Android TV

I've read that you can install Teamviewer as an app on an Android TV.

I want to help my demented mother at her dementia home from my home and remote control her TV with streaming services.

Is that possible with the Teamviewer app (like remote controlling a PC for instance)

Thank you!

I am happy you are also enjoying the conversation!

I talked about it to my dear friend @TV_Benjamin and he tested it with his own TV.

He has a Philips TV and it worked out pretty well. So, yes, you can remote control the screen like to do with your friend's PCs.

He said that it kind of feels like controlling a tablet. However, the remote control experience is not perfect. Sometimes, it's hard to scroll and to press some buttons. I prefer being honest. However, if you don't need to make a lost of manipulations, it should to the job quite well.

Here a small extract of what Benjamin could show me:

    Hello @MikaelS,

Great to hear that you want to use TeamViewer to help your mother.

It is only possible if the Android TV supports it.

Have you tried to install TeamViewer on the TV?

  • I'm planning to buy her a new flat TV, now with Android built-in where I can install Teamviewer for control from my PC and also Google Duo for video chats.

I've just started to plan to change her configuration. Right now I control her SONY flat TV (WITHOUT Android) with a special NEDIS Smart Wi-Fi Remote Control that I can handle from an app in my Smartphone. BUT it's NOT good enough. I want her to watch streaming channels too (a larger selection of TV shows and movies to suit her taste. She's not interested in news, debates, sports or messy horror movies/thrillers, and that's too much of that on the Swedish Public Service).

I want to make it possible for me to control her TV easier than now, hopefully via the great Teamviewer in the same way that I sometimes help friends with their computers.

I've started to talk to some TV brands, but I'm going to a big store to get help to find the right TV.

BUT ... is Teamviewer a solution here?

    Thanks for your swift answer!

I see... that sounds like a plan!

I do love Swedish thrillers... but I get your point. 😊

All I can say is the more the TV's brand is well-known, the more likely TeamViewer will be working fine.

We do have a list of supported Android manufacturers. Maybe you can have a look at it before buying the TV:

The first part of the list are manufacturers where 100% of models are supported. The second part of the list are partially supported.

I hope this could help! πŸ€

  • Great and swift answers again, thanks!

And YES, I like Swedish thrillers too, but this solution is for my(our) dear Mum, and she doesn't understand when it's too loud, scary, bad scenes, too many strong emotions...

I'm very satisfied with your replies, now with a list of compatible Android TVs. So YES, this will help me make it work, for sure.

    One question though;

When I install the Teamviewer app on an Android TV, is it possible to control her screen like I do when I help my friends PCs ?

    Thanks again, JeanK!

  • Hi @MikaelS!

I have the exact same situation. My mother has dementia and lives in a care home and I want to be able to control her TV from home and talk to her over Google Duo (or some other app). Currently, she has a PC, which works fine for both purposes (TV and video talk), but a TV would be nicer and bigger ;)

Did you find a compatible Android TV? What's your experience, in terms of both TV and Google Duo? Are you happy to use an Android TV now or did you revert back to a PC, after all?

Best wishes for you and your mother!

Hello, I have same situation. I’m looking for a solution on how to remote control dad’s TV and be able to select YouTube to play some concerts or happy movies for him. He has dementia and is living in a long term home. I’m currently using TeamViewer on my phone remote control his PC that is connected to his TV, but the result is not very good. How to use TeamViewer on my phone directly remote control dad’s TV? Any helpers and suggestion will be great.

    Thanks so much!
