I have 2 teamviewer icons on the base bar , one is the team viewer signin icon and the other is a black / orangy colour showing 2 connections with x' and i cannot get them to close so i can reconnect.

That sounds a bit unique - could you please provide us a screenshot of the icons?
I am sure that with some further investigation we can figure it out.
If this is a Windows device, you can also try to restart the TeamViewer service via services.msc:
(If Mac, you can try to Force Quit TeamViewer instead)
