is it possible to share the control of my PC and a friend's imac at the same time, so as to work in each other's desktops (taking turns to control the active mouse and keyboard)? Any suggestions/pointers gratefully received!

The best practice here would be to use the Swich sides feature, to change the roles.
You'll find the feature in the Communicate tab, as below:
