Confused about "New updates regarding the free usage of TeamViewer 15" article

Has TeamViewer blocked access to the free version of TeamViewer 15 now?

I tried to connect to a family member's TeamViewer Quick Support and received an error. It was something like, "Unable to connect. Reason unknown." I tried several times and got the same error every time.

Is it possible I can no longer connect because TeamViewer 15 is no longer supported by TeamViewer? I read the article, "New updates regarding the free usage of TeamViewer 15."

Part of it reads, "For our free users accessing older TeamViewer versions (specifically versions 15.00 to 15.36), we're launching a program to keep you up-to-date. Starting mid-April, users on these older versions will receive warnings prompting them to ensure both sides of their connections are running the latest release. In June, connections for users on these older versions will be blocked."

The article also says, "Additionally, we want to inform our macOS users that connections through macOS 10.11-10.13 will no longer be possible for free users."

Does the error when trying to connect to my family member's TeamViewer today mean those things have happened to me – I can no longer use a free version of TeamViewer?

I look forward to accurate answers about this.

    Hello @abpeters and @Ferg23

Thank you for your contribution to our Community by making this post! 🌏️

The answer comes down to the operating system(s) for the devices you are using with TeamViewer. An overview of our Supported Operating systems can be found in the Knowledge Base article tagged below.

Supported operating systems for TeamViewer (Classic)

If you find that you are a non-licensed user, and trying to use versions 15.00 - 15.36 on any operating system, you will get an error message that explains you are on or trying to connect to a device on an outdated version of TeamViewer.

More specifically, when addressing MacOS and not every possible operating system, for non-licensed users, any devices with MacOS 10.11 - 10.13 will not be able to use TeamViewer anymore.

Regarding any connection issues, you will want to make sure the devices you are using are supported. If they are no longer supported, then that is the answer to the issues being experienced.

I hope this answers your questions fully. Let us know how it goes and if you need further help. 👍️

  • Hi @TVSupportMatt,

Thank you for your reply. I have a couple more follow-up questions to make sure I understand…

I'm using TeamViewer version 15.2.x (the newest version that works on my Mac). I have been getting the error message about trying to connect with an outdated version of TeamViewer for a few months. However, I've still been able to connect… until a few days ago.

I use an iMac running MacOS 10.13.6. According to what you wrote, I "will not be able to use TeamViewer anymore." Is that correct? Did I get the error, "Unable to connect. Reason unknown." the other day because that's when you shut down use for MacOS 10.13?

To put it more simply, did you shut off access to TeamViewer for MacOS 10.11-10.13 in the last week? Is that why I can't connect anymore?

Finally, does TeamViewer have any free solution that supports MacOS 10.13?

    Thank you again.

    Hello @abpeters

To my knowledge, these changes for both general TeamViewer app versions 15.0 - 15.36 and MacOS 10.11 - 10.13 took place back in May/June for our non-licensed users.

If you were getting normal use of TeamViewer on any of those non-supported operating systems, such as the MacOS 10.13.6, then that was something that was not intended to happen.

Unfortunately, as of right now, there is currently no free version of TeamViewer that is supported to work with MacOS 10.13.

I hope this answers your follow-up questions. 👍️
