after a recent windows update i now get a "teamviewer 12 has stopped working" and "windows is looking for a solution" message. Any ideas how I can get TV 12 to get going again would be much appreciated.

I would try re-installing it personally, as in uninstall it, and re-install it using either an account that has administrator-level privileges for the device, or simply by trying to run the installer as an administrator.
At least that way you can start with a clean slate =]
