We paid for a years licence in September and my account suddenly says 'Free' with no warning, explanation or communication.

Your license is active - no issues in the background here. ?
You license might not be activated on your device.
To activate your license on your device, please follow this procedure:
Now, your license is activated on your device and the free license message should be gone. ✔
Note: With your license, you can only connect to TeamViewer version 8 and 9.
