TeamViewer 13 for Linux - Christmas edition

Dear Linux community,

today we are releasing our Christmas update for TeamViewer 13. Before going into details, on the behalf our my team, I would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused to some of you who missed key functionality in the previous release. To make this apology not only words, we decided to squeeze in an extra release before the next one planned for January.

Perception of the initial TeamViewer 13 for Linux releaseFortunately we have this community, which allows us to get feedback and react quickly. During the last months we were focused on improving the situation with Wayland and had to learn the hard way that Ctrl+Alt+Del is much more important to some of you.
Still, even with missing features, the majority of our users seems to appreciate the general direction we are going with the Wine-less, native TeamViewer with true 64 bit support and repositories. We hope you'll like it even more with this release.

Remote Control
remote control toolbarWorking on many machines, you can now tell on which one you are from the window title. And of course, there is the toolbar. Initially, it supports Ctrl+Alt+Del, remote lock, remote reboot, remote sign out, show remote cursor, and switch screens.
The remote cursor is the one as seen on the remote side, which is handy if somebody wants to show you something on the other side. Additionally, the local cursor takes the shape of the remote cursor.

Please let us know what you like or dislike about the toolbar and its behavior. The toolbar tries hard to not be in your way: It's slim, transparent and you can move it all the way to the screen edges. Too slim? Too big? Would you rather have a ribbon-style toolbar as on Windows? Share your thoughts! It's your chance to get the toolbar that exactly suits your needs.
Of course, more tools will also be added. Top candidates are: show black screen, disable remote input and session recording.

Computers & Contacts
device selectionThe most commonly used ways to initiate connections are now supported. By password, by password stored in your account, via easy access, or by prompting the other side for confirmation (via context menu).
Also, the dearly missed filter is now there.
When connecting to an account that is active on multiple machines, there is now a selection dialog. As on Windows, but cuter. :robotvery-happy:

TAR Package, Unofficial Ports, Setup
The TAR package can now (again) be used without installation. Just make sure that all dependencies are installed by running ./tv-setup checklibs once. Due to the short-term release there are minor caveats: Presence of Qt QuickControls is not verified by checklibs. The UI offers 'start with system' which has no effect and the tray icon is transparent/invisible (but usable). This will be addressed timely.
Of course, you can also install the TAR package with ./tv-setup. In that case, only the checklibs limitation applies.
Installing the TAR package is especially useful on non-DEB/RPM systems.
Speaking of other systems: Community member Maxxim has created ebuilds for Gentoo, and there also seems to be some work going on in the Arch universe.

The commandline teamviewer setup to assign a device to your account should now work as it used to. (Account assignment is also available in the options dialog)

Limited Debian 8 support
As per popular demand, limited Debian 8 support is back. It's a bit tricky as we cannot even use all features of Qt 5.2, as they are buggy (in a crashy way) on Debian 8. Therefore, please consider this a best-effort support. We will definitely switch to Qt 5.5 in a few months. Depending on user demand and feasibility, we might provide compatibility libraries.

Future Development
Most requested featuresWe have adapted our development goals to the results of the survey and other valuable feedback by our users. After a much needed break over the christmas holidays we will focus on file transfer, chat and mobile device support. What is done in time will be in the next release, end of January.

Known Issues
Due to the short development cycle, we could not tackle all known issues. On some systems, menus/dialogs/tooltips have invisible text. Using a different desktop (theme) can work around this. Some keys are not properly handled when connecting to macOS. If TeamViewer does not start on SUSE, one has to install libqt5-qtquickcontrols manually. On DEB systems, apt update spits out some warnings.

First of all, I really appreciate getting rid of wine and turning native. But it's have a year since the first announcement here and we are still in beta and missing the important feature of TeamViewer meetings. When I got the end of may update, I was hoping for Meetings to have arrived, but to no avail. Still no possibility to have meetings with my Windows-centric peers. So my question: when will you finally deliver Meetings in TeamViewer 13 Linux? Regards, *bleep*

Thanks a lot @DanielStm I really appreciate TV team effort. BTW, I connect from my Ubuntu 17 to a W7 and sometimes I open a ssh on remote windows to a Linux machine, I notice my vim acts crazily....key configuration are gone, although if I'm in front of my W7 machine and I open ssh as usual then vim works fine.

@rafaparche: As @globalsi pointed out, switching monitor is there. Other features like showing multiple screens in separate windows will hopefully follow soon.

@mhb: Filetransfer was only in the Computers & Contacts context menu and the main TeamViewer dialog. With today's update, it's also available in the toolbar.

@zeroconf: I know. I wished we could have squeezed it in. Hopefully next time.

@alitvak69: If it still does not work, let me know.

@ReeseTech: I'm not certain you would have less problems with a Wine version, but I'm certain they would be different :robotwink: If you continue to have stability issues (preferrably, you get the same type of problem reproducibly), please consider Help/Feedback in the menu and attach log files.

The new update is certainly helpful and much appreciated. The contact list is working for online and offline again which is a huge help. Unfortunately I am still not able to really use the Linux version. There seems to be a lot of stability issues. It will crash on me and I have killall and restart the service to get it working again. There is also a weird issue where it stops sending key combinations, and will not share the clipboard properly. Keep up the good work though! I am still in favor of a wine version until the full Linux is ready for prime time...

See the post above that explains where the file transfer menu is. It's not where you expect to find it, on the toolbar but in the menu for the known computers on the client computer. Works fine.

b.t.w. I've also just used the same feature from an old android tablet (6 yrs old, running Android v 4.n) and it works beautifully.

It's the end of February, but we still do not have the ability to file transfer. When can we expect it?

Chat doesn't work.

Sending chat message from the client to jost that is. I right click on computer and choose to send a chat message. Nothing happens. File transfer works though.

The most wanted features for now (after file transfer and chat) are still missing from Computers&Contacts menu: add, change, remove computers. Currently we have to go through web interface https://login.teamviewer.com/ in order to add, change, remove computers, including comments per computer. This is the most uncomfortable for current 13.0.9865 version that we are enforced to use web-based version instead of computer-based.

Another hand - I have to say that Linux repository works well - special thanks for that! I really appreciate that I can install, update Teamviewer using Linux built-in package management tools like APT, RPM. This is much more secure and comfortable than downloading packages manually. Keep going good work!

FYI, the transfer menu is in the list of computers, not in the tool bar.

I downloaded and installed this but nothing appears to have changed: still no file transfer menu on the remote desktop whereas if I log in from a Windows machine there is. Yes I have checked I'm running the new version number.

@drh27: Might take a few more releases, I have to check how complicated it is. As a temporary solution, you could start multiple connections, one for each screen.

Indeed the Linux version seems pretty degraded. File transfer and ctrl characters work on windows version but not Linux. File transfer even works on Android - should be an easy fix.

Really disappointed that file transfer has disappeared, especially after upgrading my Pi so I could use team view for file transfer with it!

I also had to roll back to v12 and keep my customers from upgrading; the critical missing features for me are 1)View Monitors in Separate Windows (which I haven't seen mentioned yet), and 2) file transfer. While I could live without file transfer for a while, due to my workflow with customers, TeamViewer is nearly useless to me without the opportunity to view remote monitors as separate windows. I found the survey too late to participate. Any idea if this feature is on the list to be restored?

Please have the toolbar minimized by default.

Please have the window maximised by default or alternativly remember geometry.

On the windows version, the new beta layout with one single window is much nicer instead of seperate window for teamviewer and then anothe one for computers&contacts. Would love this on the linux version. except maybe have it so as the recent connections tree can be removed, [ some of us only use TV for a handful of machines and this can make no sense, maybe if total machines is less than X don't show recent connections].

Lastly a vote towards not worrying too much about wayland. I can't see the sense in running a production machine on wayland at all yet, its still way to early for it. People pushing it as default are crazy or have very different definitions of production ready than I do. Just my 2 cents. Wait until its all done and solid first. To me, TV being bleeding edge is not as important as reliablility.

I'm running TeamViewer on Linux Mint 18.2. There is no option to add "Partner ID" into Your "Computers & Contacts".

In the previous versions I could set the zoomed view or fullscreen view...

Where is that setting in this version? The top bar is different and I don't see it!

I greatly appreciate all the work you have put in to the full linux version. Unfortunately it is still fairly unusable for me. Lots of black squares on the screen, times where it doesn't want to connect at all, and very annoyingly, the contacts list does not show online or offline. Please release the wine version as a temp workaround until the full version is prime time ready. I am having to use a VM to run the Windows version just so I can connect to my customers. I finally opt'ed for the yearly subscription you guys have been pushing, instead of just buying a new major release when there were features I needed, and now I have lost my Linux functionality..
