Function keys F1-12 enabling in remote session

Hi,

I am a newbie and not very technical. Please help me enable the function keys in a remote session. I am a household user (non-business) but still need this ability for something I am working on. I tried to search the forum for this answer and came up empty handed. I am sure it is something simple, but what!??
