Deployment on Android

We have developed an application on Android tablets, and currently have many of these out in the field. We don't have direct access to these, but the app has access to our webservice and therefore we have some control of it. If we wish, we may give the tablets a command to run an apk silently on the device.

I have seen examples of mass deployment and use the assignment options for grant easy access, but is it possible to do it on Android devices? We would rather not install the host for every device manually.
