Hello @CarlosASolla
Thanks for your post.
It is possible to convert your TeamViewer sessions and meetings from a .tvs to a .avi, using the inherent codecs available with your Windows Operating System.
If another file type (or size) is needed, however, you would need to install additional codecs to your OS.
You can find more information on codecs, such as“ffdshow”, here:

Hello @CarlosASolla
All current guidance on converting a recording is found in our Knowledge Hub:
The default settings provide an optimal converted recording for most needs.
If the default settings do not provide a video that meets your specific needs (needing a small size video that can run on an Android), we can only recommend altering the settings to adjust the outcome, until the desired filesize or quality is reached.

I tried to convert here to avi with the image settings, but it was a horrible setting that you can't even watch. I didn't want a very big file because I need to send it to the client

Hello @CarlosASolla
Thanks for your post.
If you wish to convert the file to a different filetype, you would need additional codecs installed.
This is not a part of TeamViewer, but rather the Windows Operating System. TeamViewer can only utilize the codecs your system currently has.
You can find out more information on such codecs here:

Hi Josh, thanks for the answer, but I don't have time to study about video codecs. In my opinion, since TeamViewer offers the ability to record the session, there should already be the possibility to save the video in a more familiar and user-friendly extension.
Since that doesn't exist, couldn't someone from TeamViewer support simply provide a step by step how to make a conversion of the TVS file generated by TeamViwer to AVI or MP4?
Thank's

Hello @CarlosASolla
As previously mentioned, TeamViewer simply uses what your Operating System provides for video conversion.
Without additional Codecs, the only conversion possible would be to AVI, as you have experienced.
We apologize for any inconveniences.

I tried converting here to avi with MJPEG Compressor codec, with resolution 1280 x 1024. Unfortunately it generated an avi file with a whole blurred image in which it's impossible to recognize the images, you can't even watch it.
Tried with other Codecs and resolutions, with no success either.
I'm just asking for guidance on how to do this process.

The most common solution back in the day seems to have been to download the KLITE codec pack. This has not worked for me for a long time as their codecs do not show in TV anymore. Also did not manage to get it to work with the VLAN H264 codec.
Possibly the reason is that these codecs do not register directly with windows anymore. Because of this they do not show in the convert list. I am not a video guy so that is just my suspicion.
Using ffdshow (download from sourceforge) gives bad results with giant file size but at least better than the default windows stuff.
When I have that file I use VLC media player to convert it to H.264 MP4. It works for me but I would prefer an option to convert it directly to 264 MP4 or a similar format with good results. If anyone got it to work not with two steps but one please share.
edit: the older x264vfw works for me in one step but it has worse results than what VLC gives with default setting

GUYS, GUYS, GUYS...seriously?!
What kind of tech support device requires the USER to download additional CODEC?!?!
Windows Media Player allows me to open and save in other formats..AVI, MP4, MPG...BUT it cant open TVS files.
Same with my video editing software..again..NOT compatible with TVS.
Working in support, you need to make gathering evidence by the support rep EASIER, not HARDER. I'm NO expert in codec and I went to that WIKI site and it was all Greek to me.
I hit that link above: https://community.teamviewer.com/English/kb/articles/3240-how-to-convert-a-recorded-teamviewer-session#convert-a-recorded-session and the ARTICLE WAS NOT FOUND!!
I did a search in the KB and found what was mentioned in this thread:
- Select the desired Codec and Resolution for the session recording. If audio is included, check the box to Include Audio📌Note: TeamViewer can only use the Codecs currently offered by the operating system.
That is it...
Such a BASIC function like recording should NOT be so difficult. Either make that article available again, or please provide instruction on how to covert the TVS file to a MANAGABLE SIZED AVI file. A 13kb TVS file turns into a 2MB AVI file at 800x600...seriously?!

Anyone have an answer why my convert simply comes out as a black video with a TeamViewer logo in the bottom right corner? I have tried 3 different options from the dropdown and they all end up the same...

i think that teamviewer need to make some changes in this functionality. We have a 23 minutes record, that in TVS format (propietary format) this record has 52MB size ... and converting this size to AVI (only format permited), the same record size is 4.788.000 MB ... yes .... from 52mn to 4.7GB .... this is innaceptable for a solution like TeamViewer.
How i can shared this file with my customer ¿?
Maybe they can modify the converter in the future release, and allow it to convert to MP4 directly?
TeamViewer has a system where you can request and vote for improvement requests?

Teamviewer, I tried like link above and the article was not found! This seem absolutely crazy to me.
You also mention that Windows needs to have additional codecs installed to support encoding to another format. I have many codecs installed and I still am very limited on what I can encode the video into.
This option, Microsoft Video 1 Compressor has a copyright of 1990-1992!!!!!
It's 2024, there are free apps like Handbreak that do this all day. Please, correct this problem and/or give us a good solution. We need to be able to convert to mp4 files with at least h.264 . Being as it is 2024, supporting h.265 seems like a logical choice.
PLEASE FIX THIS!!

Hi,
Stumbled across this post as I was looking for the same solution.
Thanks to ttech for the tip about Handbrake.
So original TVS file : 30 seconds = 20MB
Converted 20MB TVS file via Teamviewer conversion tool : AVI = 1GB !!
Converted AVI file via handbrake (quite fast) to Webm = 5MB - quality fine.
So an extra step to save 75% on the file size, a bit of a pain but worth it !
Teamviewer should definitely incorporate Handbrake into their program and offer WebM conversion !!
