Security Risk?

I have been using the free version of this software on my android phone with Wake-On-Lan to wake up and remote control my home PC over the internet, outside of my home network. 

I have read, that for improved security, I really should be doing this through a VPN such as "Open VPN". Before I start jumping through a bunch of hoops to set this VPN up on my home router and Android phone, I thought this may not be a a valid statement regarding the security risk since this Team Viewer connection is not through any open ports but rather through the to two Team Viewer apps talking to each other on the two devices. Is this the case or do I need Open VPN (or PPTP VPN)?

This article goes over the built in security that TeamViewer has. I wouldn’t say that you "really should be doing this through a VPN" there’s ample security already built in that anyone listening in would only get garbage data. When used properly TeamViewer is both HIPPA and PCI compliant without the use of any VPN. However, there’s no denying that adding an additional layer of security, such as a trusted VPN program, increases security when used properly. It’s like storing a document in a safe, in another safe, then another safe, and so on a few hundred times for each packet of data.
