Unable to establish a connection to remote computer when it sleeps

Teamviewer no longer is able to establish a connection to a certain remote MAC computer once that computer goes to sleep. While I never configured it in the past to gain access to the sleeping computer, I have now configured wake on LAN on the remote computer, and now an ON button appears in my teamviewer when that computer is selected. Unfortunately pushing the ON button has no effect. I am still unable to establish a connection to the computer unless it is awake. Please advise.

Guess is that since I am accessing a computer via the Internet on its own network, we are not on the same local area network and therefore this feature is not made to do this.

So the question becomes, how did I gain access to this remote Mac computer over the last two years while that computer was asleep and now it no longer works?
