Connecting remotely to the wifi/router only

We are using a program that is on two of our computers (a desktop and a laptop). In order to open up that program on the laptop, it has to be on the same wifi network as the host computer (the desktop). We would like to be able to bring the laptop to a different location outside of the wifi network to do work on that program. Is there a way instead of fully using TeamViewer (which we also have installed), but connecting the TeamViewer, but only using the wifi on the host computer to be able to open up the program on the laptop at home.
