What is the max length of TeamViewer's "Personal Password" and where is it documented?

Teamviewer 15.36.8, 64-bit, personal (free) license, on Windows 11 22H2.

I read TeamViewer's link to "Password Best Practices", and there was no mention of a length limit for personal passwords.

I set up a personal password, using a randomly-generated string of 20 characters. I pasted that into the user interface, and there were 20 black dots, as I expected. The UI said "Strong password". Good.

I closed out of the screens, then I looked around some more for the password length limit, and couldn't find one. I opened the "Options/Advanced" setting again and there were 10 black dots. Huh? When I put my cursor into the field, it said "Weak password". If the "same" password was strong before, why is it weak now?

And WHERE is the max password length DOCUMENTED for personal passwords? Surely that's something that should be listed somewhere.

Is there a length of 10? If so, why so short? And why show 20 black dots in the UI if only 10 of them will be used? And please document this.

Thanks for any help.

  • Note: From the TeamViewer doc: A 20-character password fulfills ALL of these requirements! 20 is at least 8. And, a password manager makes it easy to create 16, or 20, or 100 character passwords.

    Password best practices

If you opt for a personal unattended access password instead, please ensure it reflects password best practices:

    • In general, aspire to create a term that is truly unique
    • Strong passwords are at least 8 characters long, ideally combining uppercase and lowercase letters with number digits as well as special characters
    • Please do not use dictionary words or terminology that might be used commonly by other people
    • You should also avoid adjacent keyword combinations like “qwerty” or “1q2w3e4r”
    • A password manager can help with discipline.

    Hello @DWalker07,

Thank you for visiting TeamViewer Community and sharing your questions on password strength with us!

Let me take this opportunity to explain personal password with TeamViewer:

    1) The maximum strength of the Personal password

👉 There will be no maximum requirement on setting the personal password instead minimum strength and complexity requirements are met.

    2) The display of password strength

👉 It is the generic display with numerous (10) asterisks (*) after your own password is saved as Personal password on TeamViewer. The same rules applied to account password regardless of the password length for your TeamViewer account. You may check it out on "Options/Account". It helps to cover up the unique password and standardise the display format of passwords.

At the same time, we appreciate the questions you posted and feel free to comment below if you have any more questions about TeamViewer Password.

    Have a great day!

  • Thank you for thati nformation, it helps. I was confused by the display of 10 asterisks. It would help if you could document that there is no limit to the length of the personal password!

I'm still confused about when I put my cursor into the password field the second time, when it is showing 10 black dots, and the dialog box says "Weak password".
