Tips how to Improve TeamViewer Performance for File Transfers?

Hi everyone,

I primarily use TeamViewer for remote access and occasional file sharing. It works well for basic tasks, but I start to see slowdowns when transferring multiple files or files that are a bit larger.

Are there specific settings I should adjust, such as compression, bandwidth limits, or connection modes, to improve transfer speeds? I’m also curious if there are any best practices or workflow tips that others use to keep TeamViewer running smoothly during heavier sessions.

We’ve compiled a list of tips to help improve file transfer speeds:

1. Force a direct connection
   • Open required ports (preferably TCP/UDP 5938, fallback 443 / 80).
   • Disable unnecessary VPNs or test outside the VPN.
   • Check connection info → confirm Direct instead of Via TeamViewer server.
2. Use File Transfer mode
   • Start the session directly in File Transfer, not inside a remote control session.
3. Reduce file overhead
   • Zip/tar folders and many small files into one archive before transfer.
4. Check CPU load
   • High CPU usage on either side slows encryption and compression.
5. Avoid bandwidth contention
   • Pause large downloads, backups, cloud sync, streaming on both endpoints.
6. Firewall / proxy tuning
   • Allow TeamViewer traffic uninspected (no SSL MITM).
   • Whitelist TeamViewer domains and ports.
7. Update both sides
   • Keep both clients on the same, current major version.
8. Prefer wired connections
   • Ethernet > Wi-Fi (especially on the sending side).
